SUBJECT: SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS OF WP-5/90.

(b.2.)

(b.1. sec. 1.5.c.)

M. STRATEGIC BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS SUCH AS BOTULINUM TOXIN AND
ANTHRAX BACTERIA HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED BY IRAQ.
N. IRAQ HAS AVAILABLE A WIDE RANGE OF WEAPONS SYSTEMS THAT COULD
POTENTIALLY DELIVER CW/BW AGENTS. THESE WEAPONS RANGE FROM AERIAL
BOMBS AND ARTILLERY ROCKETS TO POSSIBLE WARHEAD FOR SURFACE-TO-
SURFACE MISSILES.
O. CHEMICAL WARFARE AGENTS IN THE IRAQI INVENTORY INCLUDE:
SULPHUR MUSTARD, GF, TABUN, SARIN, "DUSTY" MUSTARD, AND THE RIOT
CONTROL AGENT CS. OTHER AGENTS POSSIBLY AVAILABLE, BUT NOT
CONFIRMED, IN THE IRAQI INVENTORY INCLUDE: VX, NITROGEN MUSTARD,
HYDROGEN CYANIDE, PHOSGENE OXIME, AND THE PSYCHOCHEMICAL BZ.
P. IRAQ'S USE OF CW IN THE WAR WITH IRAN CAN BE DIVIDED INTO
THREE DISTINCT PHASES:
/****** BEGINNING OF SECTION 002 ******/
(1) 1983 TO 1986--USED IN A DEFENSIVE ROLE; TYPICALLY TO DEFLECT
IRANIAN HUMAN-WAVE ASSAULTS.
(2) 1986 TO EARLY 1988--IRAQ ADAPTS USE AGAINST IRAN TO DISRUPT
IRANIAN OFFENSIVE PREPARATIONS.
(3) EARLY 1988 TO CONCLUSION OF THE WAR--IRAQ INTEGRATED LARGE
NERVE AGENT STRIKES INTO ITS OVERALL OFFENSIVE DURING THE SPRING
AND SUMMER OF 198 LEADING TO THE CEASEFIRE. IRAN BEGAN LIMITED USE
OF CW IN RETALIATION FOR IRAQI USE. CHEMICALS USED WERE LIKELY
BLISTER AND BLOOD AGENTS IN QUANTITIES OF A FEW TONS, AND WITH
LITTLE SUCCESS.
