DISCUSSION
))
(b.1. sec. 1.5.c.)

5. ACCORDING TO LANDSAT IMAGERY, THERE ARE AT LEAST 516
FIRES BURNING IN NINE KUWAITI OIL FIELDS. IN ADDITION, THERE ARE
NUMEROUS STRUCTURAL FIRES, NOT RELATED TO POL FACILITIES, BURNING IN
SOUTH KUWAIT CITY. THESE URBAN FIRES WERE SET BETWEEN 22 AND 23
FEBRUARY. COMMENT: THE NUMBER OF FIRES MAY BE HIGHER; THICK SMOKE
HAS OBSCURED MUCH OF THE AREA. THESE EVENTS REPRESENT INCREASED
IRAQI "SCORCHED EARTH" TACTICS IN ANTICIPATION OF COALITION ATTACKS.
6. (S/NF) AIR ACTIVITY. NO IRAQI FLIGHT ACTIVITY WAS NOTED AS OF
090UZ 24 FEBRUARY. IN ADDITION, THERE ARE NO INDICATIONS OF THE
IRAQI AIR FORCE PREPARING FOR FLIGHT OPERATIONS IN SUPPORT OF THEIR
GROUND FORCES.

(b.1. sec. 1.5.c.)

10. MISSILE/CHEMICAL ACTIVITY. COALITION FORCES HAVE
REPORTEDLY REACHED THE OUTSKIRTS OF AL JABER AIRFIELD. IRAQI FORCES
WERE SAID TO HAVE WITHDRAWN, POSSIBLY LEAVING THE AREA OPEN AS A
KILLING GROUND FOR CHEMICAL WEAPONS. HOWEVER, NO CHEMICAL OR
CONVENTIONAL MINEFIELDS, NOR OTHER CHEMICAL WEAPONS OF ANY TYPE WERE
ENCOUNTERED AS OF 0731Z.
11. (S/NF) ON 24 FEBRUARY, (b.1. s.ec. 1.5.c.) AN IRAQI-MODIFIED SCUD SRBM
WAS REPORTEDLY LAUNCHED AGAINST SAUDI ARABIA(b.1. sec. 1.5.a.) APPROXIMATELY 8 HOURS EARLIER (b.1. sec. 1.5.c.) AN AL ABBAS
EXTENDED RANGE SCUD MISSILE WAS LAUNCHED AGAINST RIYADH(b.1. sec. 1.5.a.), THERE WERE NO DEATHSOR INJURIES REPORTED.
