SUMMARY: SOURCE PROVIDED FIRSTHAND INFORMATION CONCERNING THE
TYPES AND AMOUNTS OF CHEMICAL ROUNDS, TO INCLUDE RANGES, IN IRAQI
ARTILLERY BATTERIES. SOURCE ALSO PROVIDED INFORMATION ON THE
RESULTS OF AN ALLIED BOMBING RAID.
TEXT: (U)

1. EACH BRIGADE IN THE 20TH INFANTRY DIVISION HAS ORGANIC
ARTILLERY UNITS. EACH BRIGADE OF THE 20TH INFANTRY DIVISION HAS
EIGHT MUSTARD AND BINARY CHEMICAL ROUNDS.

2. THE SYMPTOMS CAUSED BY THE BINARY CHEMICALS INCLUDE
NAUSEA, VOMITING, AND BLISTERING OF EXPOSED SKIN. WHEN IZ TROOPS
HANDLE THESE MUNITIONS, THEY WEAR PROTECTIVE MASK. WHEN IZ
PERSONNEL EXPERIENCE NAUSEA, THEY INJECT THEMSELVES WITH AN
UNIDENTIFIED ANTIDOTE. USUALLY FIVE TO TEN MINUTES AFTER THEY
HAVE INJECTED THEMSELVES, THE SYMPTOMS DISAPPEAR.

3. THE MAXIMUM RANGE FOR THESE ROUNDS IS 43KM WHEN THE
ARTILLERY GUN IS COLD, BUT AFTER IT WARMS UP THE RANGE DROPS TO
17KM, WITH THE RANGE DECREASING AS THE GUN GETS HOTTER.

4. SOURCE BELIEVES THAT THE IZ COMMANDERS WILL ORDER THE
USE OF SUCH WEAPONS IF THEY ARE ATTACKED BY AN INVADING GROUND
FORCE.
