Subject: Answers RE: Iran-Iraq War and Iraqi CW Use
1. Cannot confirm which type of gas was used in the Iraqi
attack on Halabja. Cyanide and nerve gas are supposed to be
spread by an explosive, but we do not know how sophisticated Iraqi
capabilities are.
2. Cannot confirm which agent reportedly was used against
the Fao peninsula. Ideally, artillery spreads an agent through an
air burst; but, again, Iraqi capabilities in this area are
unknown.
3. The nerve agent used was Tabun (GA). The gas most used
is unknown.
4. It is not necessary to store chemical and biological
agents under special conditions, but it is helpful. For instance,
biological agents are better stored under refrigeration.
5. Yes, it is extremely reasonable to fear mines in a
chemical biological warfare role. Mines are a good method of
delivering agents.
