RESIDUAL RADIATION SOURCES

Filename:0505br.91
DTG: 020130Z MAR 91
FROM: DIA
VIA: NMIST NET
TO: CENTCOM (PASS TO CENTCOM NBC OFFICER)

SUBJ: RESIDUAL RADIATION SOURCES
1. DIA HAD PREVIOUSLY NOTIFIED CENTCOM THAT IRAQ HAD THE POTENTIAL
TO CONSTRUCT AND DELIVER A RADIOLOGICAL DISPERSION DEVICE.
ALTHOUGH SUCH A DEVICE WAS NEVER USED DURING THE CONFLICT TO DATE,
THE UNLIKELY POTENTIAL DOES EXIST THAT SUCH A DEVICE OR OTHER
RADIOACTIVE SOURCES COULD HAVE BEEN LEFT INSIDE KUWAIT. [ (b)(1)
sec 1.3(a)(4) ] HAS NO EVIDENCE OF ANY INTENT, ACTUALITY, OR
LOCATION OF SUCH SOURCES. THEY WOULD, HOWEVER, BE READILY
DETECTABLE WITH BASIC RADIOLOGICAL SURVEY INSTRUMENTS. AREAS OF
PARTICULAR CONCERN WOULD BE MEDICAL/INDUSTRIAL FACILITIES THAT
CONTAINED LARGE SOURCES BEFORE THE IRAQI INVASION. THESE SOURCES
MAY HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THEIR PROTECTIVE CASKS EITHER
INTENTIONALLY OR BY DAMAGE DURING THE FIGHTING.
