SUBJECT:  IRAQ - KUWAIT/ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMICAL POLLUTION RESULTING 
FROM AIR ATTACKS

1. ACCORDING TO VARIOUS REPORTS, IN SEVERAL SITES IN IRAQ AND IN 
KUWAIT CHEMICAL CLOUDS ROSE AND SPREAD AS A RESULT OF ALLIED AIR 
ATTACKS.

2.  SEVERAL [    b.2.    ] ARE DESCRIBED IN THESE REPORTS:

A. ON THE 31ST JANUARY A VERY STRONG SMELL CAME FROM RIVERS AND 
SPRINGS IN NORTHERN IRAQ.
B. ON 3RD FEBRUARY, A VERY THIN INTOXICATING CLOUD ABOVE CHEMICAL 
SITES IN IRAQ
3. ON 3RD FEBRUARY IT HAS BEEN REPORTED OF SEVERAL IRAQI CIVILIANS 
WHO DIED AS A RESULT OF BEING EXPOSED TO NERVE CW.

3.  WE WOULD APPRECIATE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

A. DETAILS REGARDING DAMAGE CAUSED TO HUMANS AND ANIMALS.
B. LOCATION OF THE CLOUDS CENTER.
C. WAS THERE ANY DAMAGE TO INDUSTRIAL CHEMICAL PLANTS?
D. DETAILS REGARDING THE RANGE OF THE INTOXICATION, HOW FAR FROM 
THE INTOXICATION CENTER WERE INTOXICATION SYMPTOMS REPORTED?
E. DETAILS REGARDING THE COLOR AND SMELL OF THE CLOUDS.
F. THE SOURCE OF THE CHEMICAL CLOUDS.  IS THE SOURCE 
CHEMICAL/INDUSTRIAL PLANTS? DIMENSIONS OF THE DAMAGE CAUSED TO 
THESE PLANTS.

Environmental Chemical Pollution Resulting from Air Attacks

	Recommend the following be [   (b)(1) sec 1.3(a)(4)   ].

DIA has no information to confirm the events mentioned in your 
inquiry.  According to estimates made at DIA, hazards created by 
attacks on chemical production and storage facilities should be 
minimal.
