This ben.fit is payable by the Veterans Administration to eligible survivors of
members dying of service connected deaths. DIC payments are authorized for
surviving spau~,~ unmarried children under 18 (as well as certain helpless
children and ~~rson between ages 18 and 23 if attending a VA-approved school),
and certain par*nts of servicemen or veterans who die on or after January 1,
1957, from: (a) disease or in)ury incurred or aggravated in the line of duty
while on active duty or active duty for training; or (b) and injury incurred or
aggravated in the line of duty while on inactive duty for training; or (c) a
disability otherwise compensable under laws administered by the VA.
Surviving spouses1 children, and parents who are on the Veterans Administration
rolls, or found to be eligible for death compensation by reason of a death
occurring before January 1, 195?, may, in most instances, receive DIC payments
in lieu of death compensation, upon applying for that benefit. DIC is paid to
surviving spouse based on the pay grade of the deceased Veteran at monthly rates
set forth in the following table: (present rates effective 1 December 1987:
however, rates are subject to change, check with nearest Veterans Administration
Regional Office in your area yearly.)

with nearest Veterans' Administration in your area.
Additional monthly payments may be paid to a surviving spouse who is housebound
due to disability, or who is a patient in a nursing home or is so helpless or
blind as to need the regular aid and attendance of another person. Parents of
the member who are within certain income limits may also qualify for DIC.
DIC payments are authorized for widow(er), unmarried children under 18 (as well
as certain helpless children and those between 18 and 23 If attending a VA-
approved school), and certain parents (based upon a sliding scale of income).
DIC may be ~nade to:
(1) Widow(er) based on deceased veteran's pay grade. The monthly rate of
DIC payable to a widow(er) is increased when:
(a) A patient in a nursing home, or
(b~ ~elp1es~ or blind, or so nearly blind as to need or require the
regular ai~ and attendance of another person.
(2) Widow(er) with children below the age of 18: The DIC paid monthly to
widow(er) i~ increased for each child.
(3) Widow(er) wIth child (over 18) who became permanently incapable of
self-support prior to reaching 18: a separate award is paid for that child.
(4) Widow(er) with a child (over 18) who is enrolled in a VA-approved
school: a separate award is paid to the school child.
