to the member's official home of record, or to the res~dence of the dependent;
next of kin; or other person(s) entitled to receive custody of the household
goods. Temporary storage in connection with a shipment of household goods is
limited to a maximum period of 180 days at Government expense.
Upon request at the dependent, household goods of a member who dies wnile on
active duty ma~ bo placed in nontemporary storage at Government expense for a
period not to exceed one year 5u~sequent to date of deatn. Storage ~nder t.~ese
conditions will be in an approved commercial or Government facility whichever ~s
nearest to the point where tne housenold goods are located on the date of the
member's death.
Regardless of pay grade0 when a memoer having a mobile home dies on ac~ive AUty,
the dependent of the member shall ~e entitled to mobile home allowances from the
place the mobile home is located on the date of death to a place designated ~y
the dependent provided the mooile home is to be used by the dependent as a
residence at destination. Mobile nome allowances payable by the Government may
not exceed what it would have cost the Government to ship 13,500 pounds of house-
hold goods between the points autnorized.
The shipment of one privately owned vehicle owned by a member who dies while on
active duty without regard to pay grade is authorized at Government expense.
Shipment, including overland transportation when required, is authorized to the
member's home of record; to the residence of the dependent; next of kin; or other
persons entitled to receive custody of vehicle.
"Personal Property (household goods, mobile homes, and privately owned vehicles)
of deceased member must' be turned over for shipment0 at Government expense,
within one year following the member's date of death." In the event it is
impracticable to effect shipment within the one year time limitation, a written
request for additional time may be submitted to the Commandant of the Marine
Corps (Code MHP-lO), Washington0 )DC 20380-0001. A request of this nature should
state reasons wtly more time is needed and be submitted prior to the expiration o~
the' one year time limitation normally authorized.
Application for shipment of personal property may be submitted to the military
service activity nearest to where the personal property is located. Any
questions and/or problem areas which cannot be resolved at local level mav be
addressed to the Commandant of the Marine Corps (Code MHP-l0)0 Washington, DC
20380-OQul.
TRANSPDRTATION OF DEP~ND~NTS
If it is desired the Government furnishes the transportation, application may be
made by the senior dependent to the nearest Armed Forces activity. Dependents
may perform travel at their own expense and submit a claim for reimbursement upon
completion of such travel to the Marine Corps Finance Center, Settlement
Division, Kansas City, Missouri 64197. Reimbursement is authorized for the
actual cost of transportation procured (less than first-class) for travel by
common carrier (air, rail, or bus) within the United States or to/from overseas
areas. When Government transportation or Government-procured transportation is
available and travel by aircraft is not medically contra-indicated but trans-
oceanic travel is performed at personal expense, reimbursement is authorized for
the cost of transportation utilized not to exceed the amount which the sponsoring
service woul~~~ve been required to pay for the available transportation. If
Government tranaportation and Government-procured transportation are both
available, tho lowest priced one will be the maximum measure of entitlement for
reimbursement. In connection with overseas travel, however, no reimbursement is
authorized for any travel performed on foreign flag carriers (carriers not
registered under the laws of the United States) unless the destination is served
by foreign flag carriers only or United States flag carriers are unavailaole.
Where the destination is served by foreign carriers only or United States
carriers are unavailable, a certification of nonavailability must be obtained
from an Armed Forces activity. Travel may be to the home of record of the
deceased member, residence of the dependents, or other place authorized or
approved by the Commandant of the Marine Corps (Code MS).
