SERVICEMEN'S GROUP LIFE INSURANCE

Servicemen's Group Life Insurance coverage is automatically provided each Marine
from the date of entry on active duty in the maximum amount of $35,000 (effective
1 December 1981), unless the Marine elects in writing, to be covered for a
reduced amount or elects not to be covered at all.    Prior to 1 December 1981, the
ruaximum coverage was $20,000.   Effective 24 May 1974, the Servicemen's Group Life
Insurance was expanded to include members of the Marine Corps Reserve.

If a valid designation of beneficiaries is not in effect, proceeds are paid to
persons Ln the following order of precedence:    (1) widow, (2) child(ren)  in equal
shares and  (3) natural parents in equal shares.   If the member did not designate
a settlement option,  the method of settlement is at the option of the beneficiary
(lump sum or 36 equal p~yments).    ~owever, if the thirty-six monthly installment
settlement option was elected by the Marine, payment can only be made in that
manner.

Following a member's death ALL official military records maintained at
~eadquarters Marine Corps and at his last place of duty are reviewed and
pertinent information and documents are furnished to the Manager, Office of
Servicemen's Group Life Insurance,   213 Wasflin~ton Street, Newark, NJ
07102.   That official has the responsibilLty   or making final determinations in
adjudicating and effecting payments under the cognizance of the Veterans'
Administration.

All inquiries concerning the Servicemen's Group Life Insurance Program should be

GOVERNMENT LIFE INSURANCE

When- a United States Government Lifa Insurance (USGLI) or National Service Life
Insurance `NSLI) policyholder dies, the designated beneficiary should notify the
Veterans Administration Regional Office and Insurance Center having jurisdiction
over the deceased veteran's account (Philadelphia,.Pennsylvania; -St. Paul,
Minnesota).   The Veterans Administration Office will ~end the beneficiary .the
necessary application forms for the proceeds.

COMMERCIAL LIFE INSURANCE

Commercial insurance companies should be notified of the death of the insured by
letter or direct contact with a local agent.    Headquarters Marine Corps forwards
a copy of the Report of Casualty (DD Form 1300) directly to any insurance company
listed on the official records of the decedent, upon receipt of a request from an
insurance company or the next of kin.

SOCIAL SECU~ITY BENEFITS

If the deceased was employed in commerce or industry after 1 January 1937 or had
90 days or more active service in the Marine Corps after 15 September 1940, you
should communicate directly with the nearest Social Security Office, regarding
any benefits which may have accrued under the Social Security Act.    The Social
Security Office should be advised of the deceased's social security number if
available.   Application must be made for this benefit as payment is not
automatic.

Social Security. ~e~ts ~re payable to survivors of a deceased member if at the
time of death the~member was either "fully insured" or *currently insured", or
both.   A currently insured individual is one who had not less than 6 quarters of
coverage during the 13 quarter period ending with the quarter in which he died.
However,   if the service member was serving on active duty for the first time and
died prior to obtaining this basic minimum coverage, his survivors may be
entitled to payments from the Veterans' Administration computed by Social
Security.   This is in addition to any other survivor payments.    A fully insured
individual is one who had at least one quarter of coverage for every four
quarters that elasped between 1 January 1951    (or the first day of the year
