THEATER, COMMISSAR'L AND EXCHANGE PRIVILEGES
Commissary, exchange and the~ter prLvileges are extended to all eligible
dependent survivori of deceased Marine Corps Personnel. Determination of
eligibility isby eitber Headcuarters Marine (tnrn~ (Code MMSP-6~ or other
Armed ~orcesAc~t ies authorized to issue identificat~on cards in accordance
with current D'pOttnent of Defense Directives. Entitlement to the use of these
privileges is s;*~ifically indicated on the Uniformed Services Identification and
Privilege Card.
PREFERENCE IN FEDERAL EMPLO~MENT
Widows, as long as they do not remarry3 and certain mothers of deceased
servicemen who served during a war period, are entitled to an addition of 10
points to their earned rating on the civil service examination. Other benefits
with respect to appointment and reten~ion are also available.
Information concerning preference eligibility may be obtained from the Office of
Personnel Management, State Employment Off ice3 or the local post office.
LOANS, ~UARANTEED, INSURED, OR MADE 8~ VETERANS' ADMINISTRATION
An unmarried widow or widower of a deceased member of the service with active
service after 16 September 1940 may be entitled to a Veterans' Administration
loan guaranty on the purchase, construction, improvement of a home. Additional
information may be obtained from the local office of the Veterans'
Administration.
SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE
Scholarship assistance for sons and daughters, in some cases, widows of deceased
service persons, is provided by many schools, colleges, special scholarship
funds, and by state laws. While such assistance is usually provided only for
selected persons needing financial assistance, in some instances the aid is
furnished regardless of need. This is particularly true of State benefits.
Additional information on this sub)ect may be obtained from the Commander, Naval
Military Personnel Command (NMPC-641C), Navy Department, Washington, DC 20370-onni
or by communicating with the nearest Veterans' Administration or Regional Office
within your geographical area.
EDUCATION FOR SPOUSES, SONS AND DAUGHTERS
The Veterans' Administration (VA) will, with some exceptions, pay up to $342.00
per month to help educate surviving spouses, beyond the secondary school level,
and each child of deceased Marine Corps personnel whose death occurs in service.
These payments are usually provided for children between the ages of 18 and 26,
and marriage is not a bar to this benefit. In some instances, handicapped
children may begin a special vocational or restorative course as early as age 14.
The eligible spouse or child may receive, upon request, VA educational counseling
to assist in selection of a goal and development of a program of education.
STATE BENEFITS
Many States provide benefits for survivors of veterans such as educational
assistance, l~settlement preference, Civil Service preference, tax and license
fee exemptions~ ~oans, relief and rehabilitation, employment assistance and
bonuses. Most of the States maintain veterans' agencies usually entitled, "State
Veterans' Com~ission~, which supervise their program for veterans.
AMERICAN RED CROSS
The American Red Cross assists dependents of deceased servicemen with preparing
and developing application for Federal and State benefits, by providing informa-
tion on other resources, by counseling them in relation to problems arising from
military service and the death of the Marine3 and with planning to meet financial
