reporting accurate numbers and weights of vehicles to MTMC
early, not moving to port too early (reduces congestion),
having hazardous cargo blocked and braced properly, and
being prepared to assist MTMC in port with security, vehicle
handling, and safety procedures.
(4) Aircraft. Experience gained during early
deployment of aircraft by vessel has confirmed the value of
using heat shrink film protective coverings (shrink wrap).
This protective measure is especially effective against
exposure to salt and corrosive environment experienced
during shipboard deploynients. AVSCOM has included the
equipment required and procedures for shrink wrap in each
aircraft shipment manual. Currently, shrink wrap is
required for all helicopters shipped on top of vessels and
areas that may be subjected to salt laden spray. Aircraft
positioned under hatch covers must be protected with plastic
sheets as a minimum. It is the commander's prerogative to
protect aircraft stowed below deck. Even though not a
requirement, it is highly recommended that all aircraft be
shrink wrapped when deployed by ship.
