objective of the SWA AINI program is to provide fast
response and turnaround to the user for critical
components.

     I. Water.

     (1) Water equipment. Water support equipment is critical
to the support of soldiers in an arid environment. Units need
to inventory all authorized water support equipment and submit
requisitions for shortages. If a unit is authorized the
Reverse Osmosis Purification Unit (ROWPU) and it has not yet
been received, they should contact the US Army Troop Support
Command (TROSCOM) (AMCPM-PWL) AV 693-2618 or commercial (314)
263-2618 for assistance.

     (2) Water Doctrine. The Army possesses the equipment and
the ability to support itself with potable water in an arid
environment. Do not take water in water trailers. Do not
purchase bottled water. Water is available in the AOR and will
be provided as required. Units should become familiar with
FM 10-52, "Water Supply in Theaters of Operations", dated 11
July 1990. Water sections and units should have all pertinent
equipment and doctrinal water manuals on hand.

     (3) Arid augmentation package. An arid augmentation
package includes additional water storage and distribution
assets as well as authorization for additional water personnel.
If authorized an augmentation or if units identify valid
requirements, request for packages should be forwarded to the
unit's parent MACOM.

     (4) Semi-trailer mounted fabric tank (SMFT). SMFTs,
3,000 and 4,750 gallon, are designed to linehaul water fully
loaded and then dump the full load upon reaching their
destination. SMFTs should not be used to move partial loads or
serve as "retail vehicles". A partially full SMFT causes
severe load shifts during transport and as a result is a safety
hazard.

     (5) ROWPU overpack. A ROWPU overpack includes chemicals,
repair parts, manuals and tools necessary to maintain a ROWPU
for a given period of time. Units with ROWPUs should plan for
sufficient quantities of overpack items as prescribed in the
operations manual. Include such items as reverse osmosis
filter elements, cartridge filters, and chemicals.

     (6) Erdlators. Erdlators are designed to purify fresh
water only and can not purify brackish, salt, or NBC
contaminated water. Do not deploy Erdlators. Deploy ROWPUs
only.
