(7) USANNCSA is located in DHAHRAN, S.A., message
address is: CDR32DMEDSOM.
(8) DESERT SHIELD Lessons Learned.
(a) Medical Unit Basic Load. Medical units
generally do not have their full complement of drugs and
biologicals (potency and dated items) due to the peacetime
cost of maintaining these inventories. It is imperative
that medical units deploying take every. possible action to
obtain their fullrcomplem9nt of these items prior to
deployment. The medical pipeline is geared to sustainment
of forces in the theater and build up of contingency -
stocks. This mission is hampered if deploying units must
first be brought -up to full operational stocks. The
exception to this~fpolicy is Reserve Component Hospital
units. The operational load of potency and dated items
will automatically be ordered and pushed to ~heater for
these units. The lesson learned is to deploy medical
units with full basic load of medical supplies to include
potency and dated materiel.
(b) Limited number of medical lines stocked in theater.
In order to effectively support the theater the number of
medical lines stocked and managed to support hostilities must
of necessity be limited. The DEPMEDS data base is being used
as the primary determiner of items to be stocked in theater.
Physician specific requirements must be carefully screened to
determine if a substitute item is already available and the
criticality of the time to the theater. A catalogue of medical
materiel available from either USAMMCSA or from USAMMCE has
been published and distributed in theatre to assist in
identification of materiel requirements.

(3) AIMI. In order to support anticipated requirements,
132 lines of Aviation Intensive Managed Items (AIMI) have been
positioned in SWA by AVSCOM, Missile Command (MICOM), and
Communications Electronic Command (CECOM). These critical
components are located at 1st COSCOM in Dhahran and an
additional 132 lines at the Theatre Aviation Maintenance
Program-SA (Base) in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The XVIII ABN Corps
Materiel Management Center (CMMC) manages stocks in Saudi
