2i. What is a `1biostat~t

Answer: A biostat is not, in the strictest sense, a sterilizing agent.
Although used in the same manner as a biocide, the presence
of a biostat in a system will retard the growth of t:Licroorga-
nisms in the system. liowever, viable organisms may still be
present in the system. In some instances, a biostat can par-
tition to the water phase in a f~el/water system in lar&e
enough concentration to effectively become a biocide. Example
of bios tat compounds which are available in the military
supply system is either of the two Fuel System Icing
          Inhibitors, MI~-I-27686 or MlL-I-8S47O. (see Question ~o. t3).
