B. Questions on Engine Oils
1. Can the OE/~mO-l5W/4O tactical engine oil (MIL-L-2104) be used in the
high temperature environment of Operation Desert Shield?
Answer: Yes. Tests have been conducted at Ft Bliss and the US~C 29
PA~S using the OE/~DO-l5W/4O oil in armor and combat vehicles
operating under sustained high ambient temperatures. This oil
performed satisfactorily. The current engine lubricant appli-
cation limits allow the OE/aDo-~5W/4O oil to be used in areas
where the expected ambient temperatures reach 1200F (4490C).
2. Does the high ambient temperature require that a Crade 50 engine oil be
used?
Answer: No. As noted above, the OE/~O-l5W/4O oil is able to perform
satisfactorily in high ambient temperature environments.
Further, the OE/}~DO-4O is also available and can be used in
place of OE/aDO-15W/40 if so desired.
3. Is a OE/11DO-50 product available in the supply system?
Answer: No. MIL-L-21O4 does not now carry the OE/HDO-50 grade. This
grade was dropped with ~he introduction of the OE/~DO-j5W/4O.
4. Are OE/HDO (Ml~-L-2lO4) and PE (~ZL-L-2126O) engine oils compatible with
each other?
Answer: Yes. MIL-L-2104 Tactical Engine Oils and MIL-L-2126O
Operational/Preservative Engine Oils have the same performance
level except that MIL-L-2l260 oils have an additional preser-
vative ingredient.
5. Can MIL-L-46152 (Administrative Engine Oils) be used in lieu of
MIL-L-2L04 oils?
Answer: No. Administrative Service Engine Oils will not, repeat not
provide the needed performance qualities Eor tactical engines1
especially when operating on the types of high sulfur con-
taining diesel fuel available in the Desert Shield environment.
If inadvertently used, serious engine wear and deposit problems
would arise.
