GROUMO VEHICLE/EQUIPMENT OPERATIONS AND `fAINTENANCE RECOMMENDATIONS
REGARDING POL FOR OPERATIO~~ DESERT SHIELD

    PRODUCT USER RECOMMENDATIONS

FUELS Use only primary or alternate fuels.
Do not use heavier fuels such as "Bunker Diesel
Fuel Oil" fuels as these are emergency fuels.
Water contamination due to condensation in fuel
tanks/cells must be checked daily to prevent
                                microbiological growth problems.
Wherever possible, check to ensure that Fuel
System Icing Inhibitor (FSII) is being used
to control microbiological growth. If not pre-
sent, FSII should be added (see "Fuel and
                                Lubrican~ Recommendations" Chart).

Do not add engine oils (OE/HDO) or DEXRON
automatic transmission fluid to JET A-1/JP-5
fuels to improve their "lubrication qualities".
Adding these oils provides questionable bene-
fit, but can cause increased nozzle/injector
deposit problems and possible ring sticking
                                tendencies.

The Diesel Fuel Stabilizer (MIL-S-33O2l) should
be added to any diesel fuel being used as a
                                means to control possible injector/nozzle
fouling problems and increased fuel filter
                                plugging. The high ambient temperatureb
coupled with the modes of vehicl~ operation
and anticipated lower thermal stability of
commercial diesel fuels refined in that
region will lead to increased fuel system
                                maintenance.

ENGINE OILS Vehicles/equipment arriving from
                                Depot/CONUS/OCONUS locations should be
checked to assure that the proper oil/lube
and designated grades are being u~ed. If
unable to identify, drain and replace with
recommended product (see "Fuel and Lubricant
                                Recommendations" Chart).

                             Vehicles/equipment operating in higher ambient
temperatures and using diesel fuels con-
taining higher fuel sulfur content (i.e., up
to L %) as will be the case require more fre-
quent oil drain intervals. Recommend that
                                mileage/operating hour/time required for nor-
mal oil change be reduced by factor of two.
