ENGINE COOLANT/ANTIFREEZE Because of the prevailing high ambient tern-
peratures, it is essential that cooling
systems of liquid-cooled engine be main-
tamed. Use a 50:50 mixture of ~IL-A-46L53
antifreeze and either distilled or potable
water. Local water contains high numeral
content and can cause deposits within cooling
systems.
Increasing the ratio of antifreeze-to-water
does not improve heat transfer properties nor
should ~OO% antifreeze be added.
Do not use any commercial antifree:e nor any
MIL-A-46L53 antifreeze taken from unlined
5-gal or 55-gal drums. ~L-A-46153 must be
packaged/stored in plastic or metal con-
tainers fitted with plastic inserts.
Use of the antifreeze extender additive
(~IL-A-53OO9) is recommended as a means to
insure against potential high temperature
aluminum corrosion of engine cooliti~ systems
that may occur. Treatment levels are one-
half quart of MIL-A-530O9 to seventeen quarts
of antifreeze solution (i.e., a treatment
level of 3%. }iowever, more than one treat-
ment with MIL-A-53009 is not recommended.
