No Limits/Controls on Distillation Produces incomplete combustion
of fuel causing loss of power
and increased fuel dilution
of oil. Will accelerate ring-
sticking/cylinder scuffing
problems of two-cycle diesel
engines. increases fatigue
failure of combustors due to
excessive flame radiation.
No Limits/Control on Particulates Produces higher incidence of
fuel filter plugging and injector
nozzle fouling/sticking. Parti-
cularly critical for turbine-
powered ground vehicles (i.e.
Ml/~lAl tanks) which are extremely
sensitive to nozzle fouling
and/or filter plugging.
Significantly Lower Cetane Number Produces increased exhaust
emissions and power loss.
Will cause greater difficulty
for cold starting operations.
7. There are acceptable alternatives to DF-2 diesel fuel that would be avail-
able in the Saudi Arabia area. These acceptable alternatives are listad as
follows:
Fuel ~cification/ Standard
JET A-I ASTh Dl655
JP-5 MiL-T-5624
F-76/Marine Diesel/DFM MiL-F-16884
DF-2 (OCONUS) vV-F-8OO (if available)
8. Recent communications with the Defense Fuel Region Middle East in Bahrian
indicate that the reported DF-4 fuel was probably a "Bunker Diesel Fuel Oil"
which is one of the two diesel/distillate fuels refined in Saudi Arabia
This Bunker Diesel Fuel Oil is in fact similar to the ASTM D97S 4-D fuel.
9. Regardless of what fuel is used except for JP-5, users need to be fully
aware of the potential for microbiological growth (i.e., bugs). The high
temperatures coupled with the presence of water in the fuel tanks forming
due to condensation and tank venting (i.e., heating during the day and cooling
during the night) is the ideal environment for producing microbiological growth.
Once this growth starts in fuel cells/tanks, it causes a variety of filter
plugging problems and is difficult to remove/clean out.
