discussions with U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Command (TACOM)
personnel, they reported~that Stanadyne apparently had changed
this flex ring component of the Governor Weight Retainer
Assembly sometime in 1985. All production pumps manufactured
after 1985 would therefore not have had this potential failure
problem because of the part changeover recommended by
Stanadyne. This introduction of the ElD Retainer (P/N 24295)
in July 1985 replaced the original Flex Ring Weight Retainer
(P/N 22940). Since then, the current ElD Retainer (P/N 28370
supercedes the previous version; i.e., P/N 24295) introduced in
1985. The major or more visible difference between the
original Flex Ring Weight Retainer (P/N 22940) and the two
latter versions (P/N 24295 or P/N 28370) appears that, in the
latter two versions, an encasement of the black non-metallic
material now exists (i.e., it is now caged).
d. To date, there havebeen noproblems of fuel-related
injector failures occurring due to use~of JP-8/JP-5/JETA-l. A
report of increased injector failures occurring in Mll3Als
occurred in FY 1989 prior tO~OperatiOn Just Cause. Subseguent
examination and analyses of both fuels being used and failed
injectors revealed the problems to be caused by high levels of
particulate debris present and not because of using JP-5 fuel,
the single fuel on the battlefield for SOUTHC0M. Further,
TACOM has conducted engine dynamometer testing with JP-8 fuel
in which the fuel pump inlet temperature was controlled to 195
F as means to increase the adverse affect of the fuel's lower
viscosity and potential for increased wear. No~injectors
failed however during these accelerated tests nor did the fuel
injector pump on the CUCV engine experience any flex ring
failures.
4. Vehicles suspected of having problem component (flex ring)
can be identified as follows: a. CUCV - all 1985 and prior
model year vehicles by the letter E for 1984 and the letter F
for 1985 in the tenth position of the Vehicle Identification
Number (VIN), a small tag under windshield top left side;
b. HMMwv - all vehicles with serial number 00001 through 03000
as indicated on the vehicle data plate (located on the driver's
side, exterior body panel). The pumps currently in the supply
system have the correct ElD Governor Weight Retainer Assembly.
The above information was furnished by TACOM, DSN 786-8288.
