SUBJECT: ~uel Advisory Message - Compatibility of JET A-i with
Elastomer Components in Aviation Materiel

1. ~ecent messages from Operat~on Desert Shield have identified
reports of JET A-I aviation turbine fuel incomparibility with fuel-
~etted elastomer components (i.e., leaking, reacting with , etc)
used in ground materiel systems.

2. This advisory is intended to provide available inf~rmation
relative to the subject of fuel compatibility and hopefully resolve
any concerns that may arise with US Army aircraft.

3. Experience gained from the USAF operations both in their
conversion in l9~9 from JP-4 to JP-8 in the United Kingdom and more
recently in a limited USAF test of J?-8 in Alaska involving
specific aircraft temporarily converted from JP-4 to JP-S
identified a seal leakage problem that was subsequently resolved.

4. This seal leakage problem that was reported as an elastomer
incompatibility matter occurred because (1) these elastomer parts
had ~een constantly exposed to JP-4 fuel and therefore "acquired a
memory" after becoming conditioned to the fuel and, (2) there
