File: 082696_d50030_074.txtST~E-VF 26 Septern~.~er 1990 SUBJECT: ~uel Advisory Message - Compatibility of JET A-i with Elastomer Components in Aviation Materiel 1. ~ecent messages from Operat~on Desert Shield have identified reports of JET A-I aviation turbine fuel incomparibility with fuel- ~etted elastomer components (i.e., leaking, reacting with , etc) used in ground materiel systems. 2. This advisory is intended to provide available inf~rmation relative to the subject of fuel compatibility and hopefully resolve any concerns that may arise with US Army aircraft. 3. Experience gained from the USAF operations both in their conversion in l9~9 from JP-4 to JP-8 in the United Kingdom and more recently in a limited USAF test of J?-8 in Alaska involving specific aircraft temporarily converted from JP-4 to JP-S identified a seal leakage problem that was subsequently resolved. 4. This seal leakage problem that was reported as an elastomer incompatibility matter occurred because (1) these elastomer parts had ~een constantly exposed to JP-4 fuel and therefore "acquired a memory" after becoming conditioned to the fuel and, (2) there e:
