ENVIRONMENTATh EFFECTS ON THE INDIVIDUAL MARINE - 9

TOPIC: Personal Hygiene and Sanitation

DISCUSSION:

The scarcity of water and shower facilities makes hygiene
difficult. Susceptibility to disease and infection increases in
the desert environment.

LESSON(S) LEARNED:

Proper standards of personal hygiene must be maintained not only
as a deterrent to disease, but as a reinforcement to discipline
and morale. Body areas that sweat heavily should be cleaned,
underwear and socks changed frequently, and foot powder used
often. Proper mess sanitation and the use of head facilities
must be observed to reduce the threat of disease.
