                   MOBILITY/COUNTERMOBIThITY - 9

TOPIC: Use of Position Thocating/Heading Reference Systems

DISCUSSION:

Few surveyed points or prominent features are identifiable on
many maps. Also, accurate 1:50,000 scale maps of the operating
area may be hard to come by. Although not a substitue for maps,
position locating and heading reference systems such as PLRS and
GPS can assist in providing position accuracy.

LESSON(S) LEARNED:

Position locating and heading reference systems should be
utilized to aid in navigation and position accuracy. Prior to
deployment to SWA, units should receive training in the use of
this eouipment. Particular attention should be devoted to
vehicle operators and unit leaders.
