TOPIC:  Range Estimation/Observation

DISCUSSION:

A combination of uniform land color,  lighting and heat mirage
effect make range estimation and observation deceiving and
difficult.   Intermediate features in the landscape will
frequently be missed.

LESSON(S)  LEARNED:

Problems in observation are lessened at dawn and dusk, when
shadows define terrain features.   Expect errors in range
estimation.
