the anticipated mission to attack and clear Al Jaber air base in
Kuwait. Professional Military Education (PME) for Commanders and
Staff on Enemy Prisoner of War (EPW) collections was accomplished
on 10 February. 11 February commenced with a four day maintenance
stand-down for vehicles and equipment. The Letter Of Instruction
(LOI) for a breaching TEWT and Fire Support coordination (FSC)
measures were distribted (Tab J, M, sec 4). Additionally, the
Third Marine Air Wing (3d MAW) aviation concept of support brief
was given. TFR marked 180 days in country on 11 February. 12
February, TFR's Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) along with a
Forward Air Controller (FAC) team from lst Battalion 5th Marines
and 3d Tank Battalion displaced to Observation Post 6 (OP 6) to
run live air on targets of opportunity in Kuwait. OP 6 was
located at QT 470010. A section of F-18 aircraft dropped 10 Mk-83
10001b bombs on the Kuwait police post across the border believed
to be occupied by Iraqi soldiers. Good hits were recorded. On 13
February, Fragmentary Order (FRAGO) 1 and 2 to OPORD 3-91 were
published for the TFR counter attacks to thwart any potential
Iraqi spoiling attack into Saudi Arabia (Tab K, L, sec 4). 14
February, the ongoing Staff Planning exercise for the attack on Al
Jaber was completed. 15 February, the Al Jaber base lay out and
refined Breach concept was briefed in a Sand Table format. 16
February, a TEWT rehersing the daylight Breach was conducted (Tab
J, sec 4). 17 February, TFR set battle sight zero (BZO) on
individual weapons. 18 February, motor transport contact teams
inspected all vehicles to minimize mechanical breakdowns during
ebruary, TFR hosts the lst MarDiv Sand Table for
the final Breach concept and changes to the OPORD were distributed
(Tab N, sec 4). On 21 Feb, TFR moved to the final AA while
simultaneously conducting a Field Exercise (FEX) to similate the
route through the first two obstacle belts doing time distance
checks. 22 February, another FRAGO to thwart the potential Iraqi
spoiling attack for the new position was published (Tab 0, sec 4)
along with checklist and code words for G-Day (Tab P, sec 4). At
1600 on 23 February, TFR went to Mission oriented Protective
Posture 2 (MOPP-2) donning chemical protective suits and rubber
boots. The count down for the attack to liberate Kuwait was in
its final hours as TFR moved to attack positions at 0001 on 24
February (Tab 5, sec 4). At 0515, TFR conducted a deliberate
breach of the first Iraqi obsticle belt (Tab R, S, sec 4).
Execution went according to plan with light resistance and initial
reports of EPW's surrendering came in about 0825. The second
obstacle belt was breached at 1125 with greater enemy resistance
encountered followed by mass surrenders (Tab R, S, sec 4). TFR
