SECTION 2
NARRATIVE SUMMARY
On 1 March, Task Force Ripper (TFR) had concluded it's drive
through Kuwait and was in a static position west of Kuwait
International Airport (KIA) preparing to retrograde (Tab A, sec
4). The original plan to return to Saudi Arabia on 2 March was
delayed by ongoing political negotiations, however on 3 March, TFR
departed Kuwait. Numerous Kuwaiti citizens lined the road smiling
and waving as TFR progressed down the coast highway to the Saudi
border. That afternoon ammunition was downloaded at Al Mishab.
On 4 Mar, TFR moved into temporary billeting at the Manifa Bay
Division Support Area (DSA). This was the first time since
arriving in Saudi Arabia that TFR Marines were billeted in tents
which was greatly appreciated on the rainy days/nights spent there
awaiting flights home. On 6 March the outbound flow of First
Marine Division (lst Mar Div) personnel began. The TFR advance
party departed on 8 March. Chemical protective suits, auto
injectors and small arms ammunition were turned in. On 11 and 15
March news articles appeared telling the tale of TFR's mission to
liberate Kuwait (Tab B, C, sec 4) On 20 March, buses departed the
DSA for Jubail airport and the return flight home. On 22 March,
the 7th Marines Staff and Headquarters Company returned to
Twentynine Palms (29 Palms) completing the seven month deployment
to Saudi Arabia.
Personnel and Administration
During March the S-1 worked on processing the many awards for
Desert Shield/Desert Storm. The S-1 also prepared manifests for
trip to Continental United States (CONUS) from
Southwest Asia (SWA). Upon arrival in CONUS on 22 March, the S-1
section worked on the expeditious processing of the "Stop Loss"
Marines for separation.
