B. Recommendation.
1. Headquarters Battalion Aid Station may function as an
additional facility when necessary to receive war casualties from
forward deployed BAS's and RAS'S. The number of casualties
anticipated may require reinforcement with additional medical
personnel and supplies, moreso when divided into it's forward and
rear elements.
V.. Planning.
A. Discussion. Initial planning for Headquarters Battalion's
deployability began in July 1991 when the present Battalion Surgeon
and Senior Medical Department Representative reported aboard. This
portion of the planning was not specifically associated with our
present operation but was specifically based on the standard
deployability requirements for 2d Marine Division. The history of
infrequent deployments of Headquarters Battalion was not a
consideration since all elements of 2d Marine Division could be
deployed. Weaknesses associated with infrequent deployments were
anticipated and proved true, however, the basic medical requirements
were in satisfactory standing. When Headquarters Battalion was
committed to deploy in support of Operation Desert Shield the
anticipated increase in meetings for planning purposes came later
than expected and at times information was scanty. In some cases
needed information had to be sought because no planned meetings were
announced, if held. The need for medical representatives to attend
planning meetings is well understood.
VI. Training. Training for Headquarters Battalion medical personnel
consisted of various areas associated with functions to meet pre-
deployment requirements and the processing of incoming and detaching
personnel.
