stapdard field sanitation practices is well known. Our battalion did
not experience any illnesses associated with poor field sanitation
practices. One occurrence did erupt during position "2" whereby a
trend of diarrheal cases evolved. The problem was quickly determined
to be associated with meals and/or containers originating at the
Division Field Messing Facility established at Kubrit. The number of
persons affected within our battalion remained at twenty-four during
that episode and quickly disappeared within a twenty-four to
forty-eight hour period.
XI. Innovations, Ingenuity and Creativity.
A. Discussion. The creativity and ingenuity which each indivi-
diual possess will determine the extent of innovative ideas. The
source of inspiration is directly related to ambition and high moral.
The first ideas which are presented stem primarily from the need to
maximize effectiveness. The obstacles which may hamper a Battalion
Aid Station's ability to provide maximum support can exist from mis-
sion requirements such as frequency of movements, tactical
requirements and, logistical complications. Some obstacles may be
resolved. Inspite of complications the mission must still be met.
Once it is determined that mission requirements can be met usually
the next question is, What can we do to improve what we've already
established? This question is but a portion of a continuing process
to ensure maximum utilization of available resources.
B. Problems and their creative solutions are as follows:
1. Ear 0-urrette unavailable. The shape of a standard
paperclip was modified and was very effective.
2. Instrument sterilization. Initially this was accom-
plished by use of chemical method. With the acquisition of an
ectrical hot plate, sterilization was performed using the boiling
water procedure followed by receipt of a portable autoclave.
3. Urine collection for an overnight patient. Foley
catherization not desired. It would've been more out of convince
than necessity and presented a high risk of infection. Urological
surgical drain tubes were available and reinforced to perform as a
Texas catheter.
4. Providing quick warming to patients. Place kerosene
heater under litter which rests on it's litter stand. This action
provided dissipated heat under greater concentration allowing for
expeditious warm up.
S. Minimize distance between the BAS's CP and GP tentage
when erected. Connect CP tent to the rear portion of the GP tent us-
ing the metal rope loops located on each tent. Distance and activity
associated with entrances and exits were moreso controlled. An ef-
fective and manageable stowage area was provided in between the main
portions of the CP and GP tents. This space also offered an isolated
area to retain patient privacy during routine exams, minimizing
interruption of other aid station functions.
