remain with the Division rear party and served as Commandant of
'Cafnp 15.
The Battalion rear party completed the turn-in of MPS equipment
and embarked the Battalion's T/E vehicles and equipment, then
returned to CONUS on 15 May. The Division rear party began
returning shortly thereafter, completing its retrograde by 28
June. On 8 June 11 Headquarters Battalion Marines were sent to SWA
for up to 6 months as part of the MARCENT SWA sustained presence.
Upon returning to ConLts the Battalion focused on reestablishing
housekeeping and preparing +or future Operations, primarily the
resumption a+ the Air Contingency Force commitment +or Trucks and
MP's which resumed in June. Another issue which had tc) be dealt
with was the still-planned demise of Truck Company, which at this
writing is still scheduled to be cadred in October, but is
supporting the primary and follow on ACF's and will be deploying to
MCAGCC in September to support CAX 10-91. It is difficult to see
how a Division which required 2 truck companies in SWA can expect
to function with none. Another manpower issue faced was the return
of MP Company to OPCON Provost Marshall MCB, as it had been +or 12
years prior to Desert Shield/Storm. This move was vigorously
resisted (citing the lessons about MP training learned since 2
August 1990) and a comprimise was worked out whereby 18 MP's
(approximately 1/3 of the company) would augment Base PMO, leaving
the remainder to train and to support ACF, CAX, and any other
missions which may materialize.
The only conventional training conducted was some limited
pistol fam-+ire and requali+ication and some rifle requalification.
h priority to deploying
units. What quotas the Battalion received were given to junior
Marines (below Sergeant) who needed to improve their cutting scares
+or promotion. All hands will be required to requalify during PY
92. PFT requirements, likewise, were waived until the Marine had
been back from SWA 90 days. All PFT's will be current by 30
September.
The most numerous and time-consuming events of the post-SWA
period were the myriad changes a+ command and parades. On 15 May
the Battalion provided 16 Marines in desert utilities to Support
the Wilmington Very Special Arts program (an artistic equivalent of
the Special Olympics) aboard the USS North Carolina. The Battalion
provided marching units +or the National Parade in Washington, D.
C. on 8 June, the New York City Parade on IC) June, and the Raleigh,
NC parade on 29 June. On 14 June the Battalion posted a new
Battalion Sergeant Major. On 25 June a combined 2d Division / 11
MEF / FMFLANT / FMFEUR change of command was held. The Battalion's
only involvement was to provide the Band, the Division Staff, and
the Battalion color bearer. 3 a+ the 4 Company Commanders changed
during the last week. of June. With these changes the Battalion and
the Division entered the second half of 1991 with a very new cast
of characters.
