COMMAND CHRONOLOGY
put to the test during the course of hostilities. The battalion began
the ground war with 5784 rounds of ammunition and expended approx
2,000 rounds during the period G-2 (22 February) through G+4 (28
February). The only ammunition resupply accomplished included 32
experimental luminescent marker projectiles and 150 complete rounds of
high explosive, rocket assisted ammunition. All of the aforementioned
resupply ammunition was received on a supply point distribution basis
at DSG-2, using the battalion's organic vehicles.
On 22 February, the battalion engaged the enemy for several hours.
One howitzer failed to return to battery after a mission and was
repaired by an artillery weapons repair contact team from the combat
trains. When it failed to return to battery a second time, it was
evacuated to the field train, then on to the 3d echelon repair shop,
where it was checked out and passed all tests and then returned to
service. Several howitzers developed minor leaks in hydraulic recoil
systems during this engagement, possibly attributable to lengthy
periods without firing high charges (one howitzer had not been fired
since October 1988); a result of training area restrictions on
Okinawa. None of these minor leaks prevented howitzers from
continuing the fight.
On 23 February, the battalion prepared in earnest for the impending
attack on Iraqi forces in Kuwait. The battalion motor transport
section painted as many vehicles as possible in a desert camouflage
pattern, using recently acquired paint. The supply section provided a
partial issue of desert camouflage utility uniforms, the first such
eater of
operations in mid-January. The battalion Was "topped-off" for fuel
and water, and received a final resupply of class I (POR), allowing it
to commence the ground assault with three days of supply (DOS).
At dusk on 23 February, the battalion combat train moved northeast
into Kuwait, in trace of the firing batteries and command post. Five
logistics vehicle systems (LVS's), carrying 1,056 complete rounds of
ammunition, accompanied the combat trains. These vehicles were
provided by DSG-2 to carry additional ammunition for the first 72
hours of the ground war. The battalion's three attached bulldozers,
which departed several hours earlier, due to their slow speed, met the
combat train just outside the Saudi-Kuwait Border. During the move
from the staging area to the attack positions in Kuwait, a distance of
approximately 12 miles, one forklift broke down. It was abandoned in
place, as it was behind friendly lines, and its location was reported
to the field trains for recovery.
Upon arrival in the battalion attack position the combat train
conducted a hasty occupation. Shortly thereafter, a convoy of eight
LVS's carrying ammunition for the preparation fire arrived. The
combat train distributed this ammunition and the attached engineer
