Subj: CBR PROTECTION FOR FIXED WING AIRCREWS
ISSUE: USMC fixed wing aircrews did not have CBR
eye/respiratory protection available when they deployed in
support of Operation Desert Shield.
BACKGROUND: 5 U.S.C. 552 (b)(3)
2. (A in response to a FMF urgent operational requirement,
NAVAFR is pursuing efforts to integrate the Canadian Armed Forces
(CAF) AR-5 eye/respiratory protection system in USMC fixed wing
aircraft. This system is a variant of the AR-5 that USMC
helicopter crews use.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. (U) CNO (OP-505), CMC (APW), and NAVAIR (AIR-531) are
seeking the loan of AR-5 eye/respiratory systems from CAP to meet
the fixed wing requirement.
2. (U) Ground/flight testing has begun; initial results are
positive. The goal is to complete testing by 1 October.
3. A Pending CAF approval of the loan of Canadian AR-5
assets, the goal is to begin fielding these systems within 15
days of receiving them.
