The First Tank Battalion's mission is to close with and
destroy the enemy utilizing armor protected +ire power, shock
effect, and maneuver, and to provide anti-armor and
anti-mechanized fire in support of the Marine Division.
During November, First Tank Battalion was deployed to Saudi
Arabia as part of Operation Desert Shield. The Battalion
continued to train and move within Task Force (TF) Ripper's Area
of Operation.
On 1 November the battalion participated in TF Ripper's
Tactical Exercise Without Troops (TEWT).
The Commanding General of I Marine Expeditionary Force (MEP),
Lieutenant General BOOMER, spoke to the staff officers and company
commanders of the battalion on the evening of 2 November.
On the 5th and 6th of the month, battalion staff and company
commanders met with their British 7th Armored Brigade Royal
Scottish Dragoon Guards Regiment counterparts for briefings and
discussions on employment. Selected members were allowed to ride
and drive the new British Challenger tank during a dry run of the
Brits newly established range.
On the 7th of November the battalion started painting all
vehicles a desert camouflage color.
The battalion conducted a night attack on the evening of the
7th. Valuable experence was obtained in the ability of the
battalion and company commanders to maneuver their units at night
in tactical formations during hours of limited visibility.
On the evening of the 9th and morning of the 10th, the
battalion participated in the TF Ripper's Night Attack which
ncompassed night movement over 30 km's, passage of lines and a
night attack.
The Marine Corps Birthday was celebrated on the 10th of
November. The battalion invited members of Arabian-American Oil
Company (ARAMCO) as well as the Royal Scottish Dragoon Guards to
the battalion assembly area to participate in the celebration.
The traditional ceremony and cake cutting were observed with the
oldest and youngest Marines, while the Royal Scottish Dragoonj
GuardSprovided a band with Bag-Pipe music.
During mid November, the companies each conducted live fire
tank gunnery and small arms familiarization firing on Sheppard
Range. In conjunction with the attached engineer platoon, the
