SECTION II
NARRATIVE SUMMARY
1. Command, Operations, and Training
3rd Battalion, 12th Marines was engaged in combat operations
in Southwest Asia during the period I January 1991 through 28
February 1991. Specific details are located in Item I Under
section IV Supporting Documents of this Command Chronology.
After a cease fire was announced on 28 February 1991 the Battal-
ion remained positioned 6 KM 5OUth of the Kuwaiti International
Airport in event further combat operations were ordered. With
the formal proclamation that the ground offensive had ended, the
battalion was ordered to conduct a deliberate retrograde from
Kuwait. On 6 March the Battalion displaced 5outh to the 15t
Marine Division Support Area at Manifa Bay, Saudia Arabia. Upon
setting up bivouac at Manifa Bay, the Battalion turned towards
the inventorying all equipment, embarkation planning, and prepar-
ing for redeployment back to Okinawa, Japan. Battery "B", lst
Battalion, 10th Marines and Battery "F", 2nd Battalion, 10th
Marines redeployed back to Camp Lejeune on 27 and 29 March re-
5pectively. On 6 April Headquarters Battery, 3rd Battalion, 12th
Marines and Battery "I", 3rd Battalion, 14th Marines vacated the
OSA and relocated to Camp 15 at Al Jubayl, Saudia Arabia in
anticipation of redeployment. Battery "I" was then chopped to
10th Marines for transportation back to CONUS. Headquarters
redeployed to Okinawa on 9 April.
Upon the Battalions return to 3rd Marine Division, maximum
leave was authorized for Marines and Sailors as the Battalion
om SWA aboard
maritime vessels. The MVS Kocak and Anderson arrived on 9 and 18
May respectively and immediate action was taken towards inducting
equipment into the maintenance cycle supported by CSSO-33.
2. personnel and Administration
During this period the administrative section prepared the
Battalion for deployment to Operation Desert Shield/Storm. While
deployed the administrative load increased with the attachment of
Battery "I" 3rd Battalion, 14th Marines. All available methods
were used to ensure that all Marines within the Battalion were
promoted, paid, and taken care of in the same fashion they were
accustomed to in garrison. While in Saudis Arabia the adminis-
trative section processed over 200 personal awards. With the
redeployment back to 3rd Marine Division the admininstrative
section worked long hours to ensure a smooth transition to a
garrison setting.
