4. Medical
Preparations for deployment to Operation Desert Shield began
in August 1990 and consisted of updating immunizations (including
Influenza and immune globulin), digesting medical reports, re-
viewing all Marines and Sailors in the Battalion for deployabili-
ty, increasing corpsman training in combat casualty treatment
skills, procuring medical supplies (AMALS, NBC medicines, special
antibiotics), assimilating five augmented corpsmen into the
Battalion and providing preventative medicine lectures to the
Battalion.
Upon arrival to Saudia Arabia and after guidance from llth
Marine's Regimental Surgeon and 15t Marine Divi5ion's Surgeon,
preparations continued. Further NBC medicines were obtained
including NAP (Pyridostiginine), Ciproflaxocin, and CANA (Valium)
and appropriate training was given in their purpose and proper
use. Also, liason was made between supporting FSSG units, par-
ticularly Collecting and Clearing Companies. Corpsman training
continued with emphasis on battle casualty treatment, I.V. place-
ment, narcotics use, safe transportation procedures and NBC
casualty treatment.
s were conducted prior to the initia-
tion of ground offensive operations. Drills were initially done
at the battery level to exercise marine buddy first aid, corpsman
stabilization and command, communication and transportation
skills. The drills were then expanded to include the entire
Battalion and finally contaminated casualties. A total of three
drills per battery were conducted initially. A Battlion wide
mass casualty drill (15 patients) and then a combined contamichat@--
ed and conventional Battalion wide drill (14 patients) were later
conducted. A dramatic improvement in every phase of casualty
care and transportation was realized as a result of these drills.
Additional corp5men were requested from llth Marines shortly
after our arrival in country. On G-3, three additional corpsmen
were received TAD from other llth Marine units to augment our
wartime capability. The Battalion Aid Station (BAS) provided
constant routine and emergency medical care to the Marines and
5ailQr5 Of the Battalion. A summary of our activities follow:
