         House of Representatives approves a $283 billion Pentagon budget including $ 1 billion
      to pay for the U.S. buildup in the Gulf. This amount must be reconciled with the $289
      billion Senate version and any agreements made in the current budget negotiations.

         The Bush administration announces it will scale down its plan to sell Saudi Arabia a
      $20 billion package of military weapons after key members of Congress say it would not
      be approved as written.  (New York Times, September 21, p. A9.)

         Secretary of Defense Cheney approves special supplemental pay for U.S. troops in
      the Middle East taking part in Operation Desert Shield. The supplemental pay amounts
      to an extra $110 per month for service members in the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Gulf of
      Oman, Gulf of Aden, Northern Arabian Sea and the Arabian Peninsula. (All Hands,

         About 60 members of the Army's 1185th Transportation Terminal Unit, an activated
      reserve unit from Lancaster, Pa., are leading the operation at the Newport News Marine
      Terminal as the Army begins loading the first ship at the terminal, the PFC JAMES
      ANDERSON, JR., with supplies for U.S. forces in the Middle East. (Norfolk Virginian-

         Department of Defense releases fourth (sic) list of U.S. Naval Selected Reserve units
      ordered  to active duty involving approximately 166 Naval Reservists. (CHINFO

         Thursday    Pentagon orders 7,106 more Army and Air Force Reservists to active
      duty. Secretary of Defense Cheney tells a congressional committee he is planning on
      ordering 30,000 more reservists to active duty by end of September. (New York Times,
      September 21, p. A9.)

         Citing a default in payments, Saudi Arabia has stopped shipping oil to Jordan which
      receives 25% of its oil from Saudi Arabia. (New York Times, September 21, p. A8.)

         Friday--- Exiled Kuwaiti finance minister says Iraqis have mined Kuwaiti oil fields.
