         Tuesday ---In a joint interview with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Powell,
      General Mikhail Moiseyev, head of the Soviet Military today says economic sanctions
      against Iraq are working and that no force should be used in the Persian Gulf unless
      approved by the U.N. (New York Times, October 3, p. Al.)

         Aircraft carrier USS INDEPENDENCE enters the Persian Gulf - only the second time
      ever that a U.S. carrier has entered the Gulf. Total U.S. strength in the Persian Gulf
      region is now 170,000. Iraqi strength remains unchanged from several weeks ago at
      430,000. (New York Times, October 3, p. A12.)

         Senate adopts joint resolution supporting President Bush's Persian Gulf policy by a
      96-3 vote. (New York Times, October 3, p. A13.)

         Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll taken September 15-18 shows widespread
      support for President Bush's Persian Gulf policy. Results are shown below:

         Wednesday --- Saddam Hussein makes his first known visit to Iraqi troops in Kuwait
      and uses the occasion to reaffirm his defiant stance against efforts to induce him to
      withdraw from Kuwait. (New York Times, October 4, p. A14.)

October 4
         Thursday--- President Bush initiates private discussions with chairmen of several key
      House and Senate Subcommittees regarding possible use of force in Persian Gulf.
      Secretary of Defense Cheney and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Powell have also
      met with one Senate Committee.  (Washington Post, October 5, p. Al.)

         Pentagon officials disclose that Iraq has developed a fuel-air explosive (FAE) which
      is a blast effect weapon similar to a small nuclear weapon. This weapon is particularly
