show of force. INDEPENDENCE entered the Gulf on October 2. (Associated Press,

In a long awaited address at the U.N., an Iraqi diplomat accuses the U.S. and its
allies of starting a "new era of Western Imperialism" and gives no indication of Iraq
withdrawing from Kuwait. The diplomat also calls for a comprehensive resolution of all
outstanding Middle East issues including Palestine and Kuwait. (New York Times,
October 6, p. 5.)
Soviet ~eneral Mikhail Moiseyev now visiting the U.S., is quoted as stating there
have been protests and defections within the Iraqi forces and rumors of coup attempts.

Based upon estimates, the U.S. Transportation Command states at a conference that
70% of Ready Reserve Fleet ships are available. The ships demonstrated 96% reliability
in their performance. Admiral Paul D. Butcher, Deputy Commander in Chief and Chief
of Staff, warns that U.S. sealift capacity is still in danger of withering to the point of

Monday --- An Alabama Air National Guard RF-4C Phantom reconnaissance jet
crashes in Saudi Arabia killing both crewmen. Two Marine UH-lN helicopters carrying
eight crewmen reported missing and presumed lost in exercises in the North Arabian Sea.
