         American death toll in the Persian Gulf climbs to a total of 42 since operations
      commenced in the region.   A ruptured steam valve on the helicopter carrier USS IWO
      JIMA results in tell deaths while a Marine vehicle overturned during a night training

         Wednesday --- President Bush declares he has "had it" with Iraq's treatment of
      American hostages and diplomats. This declaration is representative of the stronger
      rhetoric the Bush Administration has put forth in recent days. (New York Times,
      November 1, p. Al.)

         Iraq announces today that relatives of "guests" in Iraq can visit them during the
      holidays. (New York Times, November 1, p. A12.)

         Thursday--- President Bush compares Saddam Hussein to Adolf Hitler, saying Hitler
      didn't respect much but at least he did "respect the legitimacy of the embassies." (New
      York Times, November 2, p. 9.)

November 2
         Friday --- Specialist Stephanie R. Atkinson, an Army Reservist who decided to join
      the. peace movement rather than report for active duty in Saudi Arabia, was arrested
      Friday on a charge of desertion. (Washington Times, November 5, p. 2.)

         Secretary of State Baker will go to Saudi Arabia to try to untangle the complex issue
      of command of the multinational armies encamped there. (Washington Post, November
      2, p. A21.)

         Department of Defense releases tenth list of U.S. Naval Reserve Selected Reserve
