November 5
Monday --- During lengthy talks between Secretary of State Baker and Saudi King
Fahd, an agreement was reached that U.S. forces would be under solely U.S. control if
a decision is made to invade Iraq. Such an invasion, however, would only come about
if both President Bush and King Fahd agreed. On the other hand, if Iraq attacks Saudi
Arabia, a joint U.S./Saudi command and control structure would come into place.
Baker's visit to Saudi Arabia is part of an multi-nation Middle Eastern and European trip
designed to assess support for U.S. positions. (New York Times, November 6, p. Al.)
