Iraq launches barrages of Scud missiles at Riyadh, Dhahran and other sites in Eastern Saudi Arabia.
Patriot missiles intercepted all but one of the missiles which crashed harmlessly into the Persian Gulf.
One crater was found in Riyadh, apparently caused by the remnants from one of the missiles. (~New

Palestinian spirits have been buoyed by the launch of Scud missiles against Israel. (New York Times,

Iraqi President Saddam Hussein seeks to rally Arab supporters and embattled Iraqis by saying his
forces have used only a fraction of their weaponry to fight and win "the mother of all battles." News
reports from Baghdad depict Iraqis scavenging for food, lining up for gasoline and drawing water from
the Tigris river. But travelers from the besieged capital report no sign of public readiness to challenge
Saddam Hussein's stewardship of the war. (New York Times, January 21, p. AlO.)
As of 6:00 P.M. (Saudi time) the total count for allied sorties has risen to over 7,000. 15 Iraqi
aircraft have been destroyed. Only eight American aircraft have been lost. 19 floating contact mines
have been found - all in the northern Persian Gulf. There have been 6,968 intercepts of merchant

Monday --- Administration officials and private military experts say that five days of one of the most
intensive air wars in history have weakened Iraq but have not eliminated Iraq's ability to wage war and
Iraq `-s command and control structure. More sorties have been flown to date than in the eleven day
bombing of Haiphong and Hanoi in 1972. The impact on Iraqi ground forces in and around Kuwait is
uncertain. Cloud cover over much of the area has slowed the gathering of information about. the

After a harrowing night in which Iraq fired at least nine surface to surface missiles at Riyadh and
Dhahran, allied officials are scaling back their earlier claims of having achieved air superiority over
many areas of Iraq and having disabled most of Iraq's Scud missile launching sites. Eight of the Scuds
