      On 17 January, Desert Storm began with a flurry of activity.

Initial strikes against Iraq began with the first combat use of
TOMAHAWK land attack missiles --or TLAM-- launched from
cruisers, destroyers and battleships in the Persian ~uIf and Red

Sea.  These TLAM strikes opened a carefully crafted strategic air

campaign~that included Air Force, Marine, Navy and allied air

assets. It was the initial barrage of TOMAHAWK cruise missiles

which took out heavily defended targets and was effective in

eliminating IraQ air defenses and their ability to control aircraft

from the ground.


      Nearly 300 Tomahawks were launched as part of the

integrated air campaign.    During the course of Desert Storm,

Tomahawk launch platforms included 14 surface combatants, two
