    To understand fully the contribution of the Navy and Marine
Corps, you also have to consider the large scale models of Iraqi
defenses we discovered had been set up in Kuwait City.     The

defenses were pointed seaward, and at one point, 1:1 Iraqi
divisions were committed to defend Kuwait against amphibious

attack. This diversion of forces was a critical element of our

overall campaign plan.  It set the stage for coalition armored

forces on the western flank4o rapidly envelop the Iraqi forces
facing seaward and southward towards the central thrust

spearheaded by the Marines.     It was a key to success in the

ground attack to free Kuwait.

    I need here to emphasize the criticality of sealift.   Compared
to combat operations, sealift may not be glamorous, but, it is
