- Sealift moved 2.4 million tons of cargo an average of 7500
miles to the Gulf during the first six months of DESERT
SHIELD By comparison, this is more than four times the
amount of cargo carried acr~oss the Bnglish Channel to Normandy
during the D-Day invasion of World War Two and more than 6.5
times that of- the peak force buildup during the Vietnam War
during a similar period.
- On 2 Jan 1991, at the peak of the DESERT SEfIELD
deployment, the military sealift command had 172 ships unde~v~'iy.
