       Subj:  FOX NUCLE~R, BIOLOGIC~W CHEMIC~L RECONN~ISS4NCE SYSTEM
              (FOX NBCRS)

       B~CKGROUND:  The Fox NBCRS is produced by Thyssen Henschel    (a West
       German contractor) and 140 Fox NBCRS are currently fielded and
       used by the West German 4rmy.      It is a highly mobile, six wheeled
       amphibious vehicle,  tailored to perform NBC reconnaissance on the
       current battlefield.      It weighs 18.7 tons combat loaded and is
       powered by a 320 HP V8 diesel.      The U. S. ~rmy is utilizing General
       Dynamics to transition N~TO technology to the U. S. ~rmy production
       base.  When all existing systems are integrated,     it will provide a
       mobile standoff sensing capability for detecting,     identifying, and
       reporting all NBC threats.      The Fox NBCRS'is collectively protected
       which will enable the crew to perform missions without being
       encapsulated in NBC protective ensembles.      The Fox NBCRS vehicles
       are being provided to the United States by the German Government as
       part of their contribution to Desert Shield.

(      DISCUSSION:

   __      a.  USMC will receive 10 vehicles for use in conjunction with
       Operation Desert Shield.

           b.  L~V mechanics (MOS 2147) will be trained in Germany for
       maintenance at the unit level.

           c.  ~ll support, to include maintenance, parts, etc., will be
       provided by the U. S. ~rmy/General Dynamics in SW~.

           d.  ILSD will be involved in all future meetings and
       conferences to plan for life cycle support.

           e.  ~t present, there is no required operational capability for
       the Fox NBCRS.   The NBC proponent at MCCDC is presently working
       with MCRD~C (SSCNBC) on this.
