Medical Directorate
Comprised of four departments including Medicine,
psychiatry, Intensive Care, and Environmental & Preventive
Medicine. this directorate performs a wide range of medical and
health services at Fleet Hospital Five.
Medical Department, which includes Dermatology, Sick Call
and all wards, is staffed by more than 60 physicians, physician
assistants, nurse practitioners and hospital corpsman. The
physicians of Medical Department are in charge of patients
admitted to Fleet Hospital Flve's 14 medical and surgical wards.
Sick Call is responsible for staff illnesses and all
immunizations; Physician Assistants support surgical teams in
Casualty Receiving.
Specialist support by staff physicians include consultative
Services for Infectious Diseases, Pulmonary, Cardiology,
Nephrology, Allergy, Hematology and Neurology.
Cardiologists have succeeded in returning numerous patients
to duty by innovative use of stress testing techniques instead of
medically evacuating (MEDEVAC) them to out-of-theater hospitals.
Allergists and neurologists have also used innovative ways to
evaluate patients with asthma and syncope to avoid MEDEVAC.
Infectious disease specialists are vigilant in the control and
treatment of infectious diseases and developed treatment
protocols to adjust to the restrictions of field medicine.
Dermatologists have also rendered cuts tanding care, seeing
more than 2300 patients and frequently preventing the medical
evacuation of patients.
Psychiatry DepaLrtrnent is staffed by two psychiatrists, a
d corpsmen.
Psychiatry evaluates and treats the mental health of active duty
personnel and determines fitness for duty. Psychiatry also
supports the Fleet Hospital Five staff and other medical units
by providing training in Combat Stress Management.
Int ensive Department staffs four Interisive Care Units (ICUS)
with a t@tal of 80,,beds and 44 ventilators. Physicians in this
department are responsible for severely il'A patients and provide
post operative care to patients coming out of Surgery. In
addition to ICU duties, staff physicians from this department
provide subspecialty consultation in pu2morology, cardiology.
nephrology and gastroenterology.
Environmental Health Departir-ent provides surveillance for
and technical assistance with pest control, food and water
sanitation, and sanitary disposal of trasb and sewage. This
0 department is also responsible for compiling and tracking
information on the incidence of preventable diseases.
