            Ancillary Directorate

                Divided into four departments including Laboratory, Pastoral
            Care, Pharmacy and Radiology, Ancillary Directorate provides many
            of the services necessary to complement qual4.ty combat medical
            care.

                Laboratory Department provides a broad spectrum of
            diagnostic testing to treat both medical and surgical patients.
            Laboratory stafo members are capable of providing transfusion,
            hematology/coagulation; serology, chemistry, bacteriology and
            urinalysis services. With.more than 40 enlisted laboratory
            technicians, two medical technologists and a pathologist, this
            department can process in-house blood donors and provide a
            Laboratory Rapid Response for mass casualties.

                Pastoral Care Department provides services in three main
            areas; visitation and counseling, religious ministry, and
            American Red Cross messages. Fleet Hospital Five's three
            chaplains, who are assisted by three religious program
            specialists, have performed more than 3,000 visitations and
            counselings of hospital staff and patients. Pastoral Care
            effectively fulfills the religious needs of each faith group
            represented among Fleet Hospital Five staff and patients by
            holding more than 30 religious activities weekly. This department
            also delivers an average of 200 American Red Cross messages a
            month.

                 Pharmacy Department provides inpatient'-and outpatient
            pharmacy services for the 500-bed combat support hospital. Two
            registered pharmacists and more than a dozen enlisted pharmacy
            .technicians dispense prescribed drugs for patients. perform basic
            extemporaneous compounding, offer an Over the Counter handout
provide in-service training of Fleet Hospital Five's
            Nurse Corps officers and hospital corpamen. During this
            departmont's first thr&e months of operation, pharmacists issued
            a monthly average of 2,300 prescriptions for outpatients and 950
            inpatient orders.

                 Radiology Department aids staff physicians with the
            capability to make timely diagnoses of combat casualties by
            providing a broad spectrum of diagnostic radiologic studies and
            procedures. Staffed with radiologists and enlisted
            technologists, the Radiology Department possesses the capability
            to perform all routine examinations and works closely with other
            Fleet Hospital Five specialists to provide more than 10 special
            studies, such as barium swallows, IVPs and arthrograms.

                 In a combat situation radiologists will interpret radiologic
            images 24 hours a day.
