C. LESSON LEARNED:
(1) VEHICLE FOR CRASH FIRE FIGHTING. THE 4X4 GMC PUMPER IS
INADEQUATE FOR CRASH FIRE FIGHTING. IT HAS NO CAPABILITY OF
PRODUCING LARGE AMOUNTS OF FOAM AND DELIVERING IT QUICKLY AS
THROUGH A TOP MOUNTED MONITOR ON A CRASH TRUCK. DRILLS, HOWEVER,
HAVE BEEN PRACTICED USING TWO 1 1/2" REAR PRE-CONNECTS WITH FOAM
WHICH DISCHARGE 100 GPM EACH.
(2) VEHICLE FOR STRUCTURAL FIRE FIGHTING. THE 4X4 GMC IS
ADEQUATE FOR STRUCTURAL FIRE FIGHTING IN THE BERTHING OR
HOSPITAL AREA.
(A) ADDITIONAL COMPARTMENTS SHOULD BE INCLUDED ON THE
LEFT SIDE TO MOUNT SCBA'S WHERE THE HARD SUCTION HOSE
IS LOCATED. ALSO ADDITIONAL METAL DIVIDERS IN THE HOSE
BED ARE NEEDED TO SEPARATE FORWARD AND REVERSE BEDS AND
A SEPARATE TRAY FOR HOSE BUNDLES WITH BATED "Y". TWO
MORE 1 1/2" NOZZLES ARE NEEDED FOR THE HOSE BUNDLES,
(AS AKRON COMBINATION NOZZLE).
(8) ANOTHER POINT OF CONSIDERATION WOULD BE THE USE OF
1 3/4" SYNTHETIC JACKET HOSE IN LEU OF THE 1 1/2"
COTTON OR NYLON WOVEN JACKET HOSE. WE HAVE HAD THREE
LENGTHS BREAK BECAUSE PROBABLY IT BECAME ROTTEN AFTER
NOT BEING DRIED PROPERLY. WE HAVE NO HOSE TOWER TO DRY
HOSE. (SYNTHETIC HOSE CAN BE LOADED WET.) MOST FIRE
DEPT ARE NOW GOING TO THE SYNTHETIC JACKET HOSE AND
"TASK FORCE TIP" FOR THAT REASON AND BECAUSE UP TO 360
GPM CAN BE PRODUCED.
(C) THE DRAFTING CAPABILITY WAS TESTED ON 4X4 GMC
PUMPER AND FOUND THAT THE LIFT WAS TOO GREAT FROM OFF
THE SEA WALL DOWN TO THE WATER FOR THE PRIMER TO PICK
UP A SUCTION. (ABOUT 18 FEET).
(3) VEHICLE, WATER TANKERS AT FLT HOSP #5. THE WATER
TANKERS ARE CONSIDERED TO BECOME PART OF THE FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEM
IN EVENT OF FIRE. IF THEY WERE EQUIPPED WITH A LARGE MANIFOLD
BOTTOM SIDE, GATE VALVE AND THREADS FOR A 4 1/2" CONNECTION, A
FIRE ENGINE PUMPER COULD DRAFT UP TO 1000 GPM THROUGH A HARD
SUCTION CONNECTED TO THE TANKER. IF THE MANIFOLD ALSO INCLUDED A
CONNECTION FOR A P250 PUMP THIS COULD ALSO ALLOW FOR THE
FLEXIBILITY OF USING THE TANKER AND P250 AS A FIRE FIGHTING
SYSTEM, IN THEMSELVES. CURRENTLY, THE TANKERS CAN ONLY SUPPLY UP
TO 200 GPM THROUGH A 2 1/2" HOSE. THIS IS DONE BY RUNNING THE
ONE CYLINDER WISCONSIN ENGINE MOUNTED UNDER THE TANKER AT FULL
THROTTLE AND DISCHARGING THE 2 1/2" LINE CONNECTED TO IT TO
EITHER THE WATER TANK ON THE ENGINE OR HOOKING IT INTO THE 2 1/2"
INTAKE PORT ON THE ENGINE. 200 GPM IS SUFFICIENT TO SUPPLY 2 - 1
1/2" LINES FLOWING 100 GPM EACH. (NOTE, THE WISCONSIN ENGINE
PRODUCES ONLY 70 PSI AT 200 GPM, NOT SUFFICIENT PRESSURE TO BE
USED BY ITSELF).
