COMBAT CASUALTY CARE
MISSION:
0 The primary mission of the Combat Casualty care medical support
system is to provide necessary medical care to sick and
injured. Inherent in this mission are the requirements to
prevent disease and injury, minimize mortality, minimize
disability, restore functional health, and if possible, return
personnel io duty in-theater with the Fleet Marine Force (FMF)
and Fleet. Further requirements include stabilizing and
preparing for evacuation those patients expected to exceed the
length of stay dictated by the evacuation policy.
0 To accomplish the mission requires the establishment of a
continuum of care from the Forward'Edge of Battle Area'(FEBA)
to the continental 'U.S. (CONUS). This continuum of care is a
system which:
- must be sufficiently mobile to deploy with the Fleet and the
FMF
- must be flexible in order to tailor medical capabilities to
mission requirements
- -must be rapidly responsive to provide care when and where
needed
MEDICAL ELEMENTS OF TIIE CONTINUUM OF CARE:
0 objective:
- To provide optimum care and treatment to the sick, injured,
and wounded in an uninterrupted.-manner.
-- Continuity in care and treatment is achieved by moving the
patient through a progressive, phased 'medical support system
(Echelons of Care) extending from the forward area of the
combat zone to the area as far rearward as the patient's
condition requires, possibly to CONUS. Each echelon
contributes a measured, logical increment appropriate to its
location and capability.
-- The concept of care at each echelon of the medical system
is limited by four interacting factors: (1) the urgency of the
patient's needs; (2) the requirements for mobility of medical
personnel and facilities; (3) the capabilities of medical
personnel and facilities; (4) amount of workload reaching the
echelon relative to its treatment capacity.
