SUBJECT: COLLECTIVE PROTECTION
1. Reference your conversation with Maj Eng today the following
information is provided.
2. The M51 collective protective shelter system is the only type
classified system available for division level medical units.
Prior to deployment I had the opportunity to speak with many of
the units regarding their M51's. Indications are that many of
the systems were not deployed due to lack of serviceability and
no prime mover. 49 systems were refurbished by depot,
distribution as follows:
a. 24th Inf Div: 16
b. 702d Med Co Clr: 4
C. 3rd ACR: 5 (enroute to the AOR via the 32d MEDSOM).
d. 502d FSB, 2AD: 4 (same as above).
e. 32d MEDSOM: 20 Systems (To be distributed as determined
by the priority established in country to medical units).
3. There are approximately 81 backorders for the M51's at depot
for Desert Shield units. The item manager has let a contract for
replacement bubbles, however you will not see any of these items
for at least 6 months to a year. After the bubbles are
manufactured additional M51's could be built.
4. The M51 variant would be a combination of the M68 and a new
shelter system. There are approximately 250 M68's (which is the
power generation unit of the M51 to include an environmental
control unit) which could be refurbished with an upgrade soft
shelter (M51 variant). It would have twice the usable space(300
sq feet vs the 150 sq ft of the MSI), and be easily
decontaminated. The fabric is made of a kevlar/teflon mixture.
We are prepared to push for this system if ARCENT viants it. Need
ow t your requirements are for both the M51 and the M51
v'oarki:nt.whaThe problem of the prime mover still exists can't help
there.
4. The Chemically Biologically Protected Shelter (CBPS) is
covered in the message to the CENTCOM Surgeon. It is the M51
replacement and was designed for the light divisions. Heavy aA
division CP shelters are scheduled for FY95. Recommend
at the CBPS system for collective protection regardless of
you look
division type. :ed :n your rpe@ire
