                Operations Desert Shield and Storm (ODS/S) were austere.

         Soldiers experienced blistering heat in summer, and the winter

         months were punctuated by weekly sand storms, cold nights and

         several drenching downpours. Throughout this, soldiers slept in

         tents, in or on their vehicles, and even on cots under the stars.

         They ate Meals-Ready-To-Eat from plastic pouches, tray rations or

         TV-style dinners, and drank bottled water or water which had been

         processed from reverse osmosis water purification units (ROWPUs).

         Troops wondered what the future might bring and if and when they

         might go home. Physicians, both active duty and reserve, also

         shared this experience.

              The 3d ACR was alerted to deploy from El Paso, Texas, to

         Saudi Arabia on August 7, 1990. Between September 19 and October

         3, 1990, 4,272 3d ACR soldiers were transported mostly by leased

         commercial aircraft to Saudi Arabia to unload equipment in port

         and prepare for mobilization to defend an area in the

         northeastern Saudi Arabian desert.

             The medical experience of the 3d ACR was in many ways

         typical of "forward" medical support during ODSIS. Forward

         medical elements attached to battalions, regiments, and divisions

         were vital resources in ensuring the health of soldiers and
