       1. @    The threat forces opposing Desert Shield deployed forces
       have been attributed as having the capability to conduct
       biological warfare. No biological detection or identification
       capability currently exists for these deployed forces. '3:t is
       imperative that a near-term solution to this deficiency be found
       to significantly lessen this hazard.
       2. @    The attached message (TAB A)   to AMC requests their input
       in determining a near-term solution based upon currently
       available technology and developmental initiatives in the area of
       biological agent
                         sampling and detection/identification. Also
       requested is critical operational input into the use and
       procedures of biological agent monitoring.
       3. @    Current technology and equipment availability will only
       provide a limited bio detection and identification capability.
       The intent of this initiative is to quickly gain a near-term
       capability and expand that capability as technologies, doctrine,
       and training mature.
